Picpoul

Meet the Picpoul grape variety, an ancient white grape from southern France, celebrated for its lip-stinging acidity. Flourishing in the Mediterranean sun, it breathes life into full-bodied, herbal, and citrus-infused white wines, particularly in the Picpoul de Pinet AOC.

Historically blended with Clairette, Picpoul faced a setback in the 1880s when downy mildew and phylloxera wreaked havoc on the European wine industry. The susceptibility of the Picpoul grape to pests and disease left it somewhat out of favour in the post-phylloxera viticulture era. Nevertheless, resilient vines found refuge in sandy coastal soils near Pinet and the Etang de Thau.

While predominantly found in France, Picpoul also thrives in Portugal and Spain, where it is known as Picapoll and Avello. Beyond the well-known Picpoul Blanc, rare variants like Picpoul Gris and Picpoul Noir exist, adding a touch of diversity. Here’s to the enduring and remarkable qualities of Picpoul! Cheers!
